TN Govt rolls out Rs 1,185 crore women employment and security program | Chennai News - Times of India

CHENNAI: Minister of Special Program Implementation Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday announced a five-year program — called Tamil Nadu Employment of Women and Security — with an investment of Rs 1,185 crore and support from the World Bank.
A number of initiatives will be undertaken under the scheme, including conducting a psychometric test for government school students in classes VIII to XII to assess talent, ‘Earlyprenurship’ program from this academic year to teach entrepreneurial skills to students and banking of information on skills development and employment opportunities.
Responding to the debate on the demand for grants for the department, Udhayanidhi said the role of women was important in realizing the government’s ‘Dravidian model’ target of a trillion dollar economy. “The scheme will be implemented at Rs 1,185 crore for the next five years (2024-2029),” he said, outlining the specifics of the programme.
The initiative will initially be launched in eight districts, identifying women’s skills and developing a quality employment program. An information bank for women will be set up to provide details on skill development, entrepreneurship, psychological counseling and employment besides workplace safety.
A talent assessment platform will be introduced to assess the abilities of girl students of classes VIII-XII in government schools through psychometric tests, helping them choose suitable careers.
The initiative also plans to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience by providing practical industrial training to final year students in government colleges.
Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) centers will be established in all 10 women’s industrial training institutes and four women’s polytechnics, benefiting 4,000 students.
Model after-school daycare and senior community care centers will also be established to support working women and seniors living alone.
As a continuation of the Naan Mudhalvan scheme (a skill development program for students), a mega program called TN-Skills-Finishing Schools will be launched to provide job-seeking graduates access to tailored skill development opportunities for their scale, skills. and interests. At the end of the training, practical and employment camps will take place.
“The best institutions have been selected to offer skill-based courses with international certification and industry recognition. Companies will offer fully and partially subsidized ‘skills vouchers’ to young people.”
The Naan Mudhalvan scheme, which offers skill-based courses for various streams, will be expanded to include pre-medical courses, benefiting 40,000 students. Another new scheme, Sigaram Thodu, will be launched to provide skill development training and employment opportunities to 1,000 meritorious students from rural areas studying in arts, sciences and engineering courses.
